How to keep your cool when it’s getting H – 😎 – T Overheating & unbearably hot buildings are becoming more & more frequent. In the UK this is often associated with large areas of glass & south facing facades, often seen on modern buildings or experienced in conservatories. When considering glazing during a project, you need to be mindful of the potential for overheating, especially the size of the glazing & orientation of the building & rooms. There are specific methodologies that can be completed to reduce the risk of overheating. Generally speaking, there are 2 types of cooling. Passive & active. Passive means it is built into the fabric of the building & does not need any power to generate cooling. Active means there is an engine behind the cooling system & the engine needs energy to be powered, usually by electricity, so these systems are not energy efficient. Here are a few cooling options to consider: 1.Passive shading devices such as blinds, shade sails, shutters, and slatted structures like a pergola. 2.Passive shading can also be created by moving new window or door frames further into the wall so a shadow is created & less sunlight is let in. 3.Solar control glass, that has a special coating that reflects the heat back again. 4.Night time cooling.
