What are Thermoblocks and how do they help ? When building in traditional brick and block masonry [which doesn’t look likely to stop] a thermal bridge happens when the wall meets the floor. The insulation is broken or bridged by the inner leaf of concrete blockwork, this creates a gap in the line of thermal defence. It may not seem like a big deal but thermal bridges can contribute to a massive amount of heat loss in buildings, and can sometimes contribute to cold spots, damp and mould gathering in these areas. For decades it wasn't possible to place insulation under a supporting wall because the insulation would have been crushed. However, good news people ! There are now structural loadbearing insulation blocks on the market that reduce this thermal bridge and are strong enough. One such product is the Marmox Thermoblock. Thermoblock is a block of load-bearing insulation material, the same height as a brick, and is stronger than some concrete blocks. I’ve been drawing and specifying Marmox Thermoblocks for a while now and it’s been hard work trying to convince builders to use them. It requires rigorous checking on site to make sure they’ve been ordered and used as intended. Marmox Thermoblocks aren’t that expensive either I don’t think, so they shouldn’t create cost issues.
