Do you live in an older house? When I say older I mean a house built before the 60's. Are you getting a bit of mould growth or damp patches on the walls? Do you want to know why that's happening? Very simple, the chances are you will probably have a 9inch solid brick wall with no cavity. This was fine when the house was first built because it would of had lime plaster which is breathable so it doesn't trap moisture. Lime also won't let mould grow on the surface becauseof its high alkaline ph. The plaster that we use these days (gypsum based not lime based) doesn't work the same as it attracts moisture and will actually draw it through a solid wall (with no cavity). A cavity is a gap between the external wall and the internal wall. When it rains the outside walls get wet but because of the cavity the interior wall isn't affected. So if your house doesn't have a cavity then it's important that you get a plasterer that understands how to deal with penetrative damp. Any base coat plaster will need to have a waterproof additive. What can you do in the meantime? When it's cold and damp outside you will want to get a bit of air circulation inside (your basically trying to dry off any moisture that comes through the wall) Now there's also the issue of condensation on cold surfaces.
