Another day, another heat pump. This time I was called to undertake a review on a Daikin Altherma Air Source Heat pump system. It’s been in 11 months and using astronomical amounts of electricity and not heating half of the property. It was found that the heat pump was wired incorrectly, has no hydronic separation, the pump from the underfloor is pumping through the return and pushing past the Esbe valve. Undersized pipework etc etc. An absolute cluster fk. Customer advised and aided to report back to Daikin and RECC to get this rectified by the installer who clearly has no clue. Heat pumps work fantastically well if you know what you’re doing. It’s installations like this that give them a bad name. The truth is the amount of registered installers truly able to install these correctly and more importantly set them up are in the single digit percentages. And the government are pushing this main stream! Something needs to happen to educate installers as these are not gas boilers that you can throw on the wall and leave set up all wrong and they still work. Heat pumps should be installed by heating engineers who understand flow, pipe sizing, setting pumps to maximum index resistances and no more, pressure setting valves etc etc and not your standard heating installer.
