Bourne Walk and Whistler Square water features at Chelsea Barracks have been awarded Highly Commended at the Natural Stone Awards 2022. The category is for a project that involves the high quality and innovative use of natural stone in landscaping. We specified Brathay slate, supplied and fabricated by Burlington Stone from their Cumbrian quarries. Situated in Belgravia, Chelsea Barracks is a world-class development that integrates a range of apartments, penthouses and townhouses into a landscape masterplan of seven garden squares. The Cumbrian Slate water rill in Bourne Walk forms a key feature in the ecological corridor along Chelsea Bridge Road and holds the memory of the Westbourne River which once flowed through the site, while the Whistler Square water scrim captures light and the reflection of surrounding architecture and landscape, finely cut with an overlay of the lost rivers of London. We worked closely with Fountain Workshop and Burlington Stone in the creation of refined and high quality 3D detailing for both water features. The collaboration created beautiful visual effects while reducing waste in the process. The range of British stones used were selected for their unique character, the natural synergy of slate and water and the desire to utilise local materials. The response from the judges was that it is a beautiful, well-delivered scheme that showcases a high quality level of landscape architecture and collaboration.
