Finished this front drive just after Christmas for a great family in Castlerock.nnThe brief was to increase the space for parking whilst adding some structure for future trees and plants. The garden has been designed to make what was a relatively large open area more visually appealing by incorporating lots of areas for planting, whilst keeping things as low maintenance as possible. nn Tobermore sienna block paving was laid for the driveway and various other Tobermore materials used for creating borders, beds and the front door step. Looking forward to seeing this one planted up in the spring!

FAQs

How far apart do I need to plant a bare root hedge?

We recommend planting bare root plants at 5 per metre in a staggered row 40cm apart. Hedges planted in a staggered row will form a thicker hedge faster. Planting in a single row I would recommend 3-4 per metre.

How far apart do I need to plant a pot grown hedge?

Pot grown hedging slightly different. The size and habit of the plant as well as the pot size will determine the appropriate spacings. Advice on spacings of large plants can be given by a member of our team. In most cases we recommend planting 2 per metre.

How much water will my hedge need during the growing season?

Unfortunately there is no easy way of suggesting how much water a hedge will need. It changes from hedge to hedge. Under watering will cause the leaves to burn, and if not caught quickly enough, the plants will die. You only need to get this wrong once to undo all the hard work put in. On the other hand overwatering can be just as serious. This can cause the leaves to droop and the plants to decay from fungal or bacterial rots.

What aftercare will my new hedge require?

Your new hedge should be kept clear of competing grass and weeds. To keep these under control I would recommend using a bark mulch which will help retain and offer some protection.

What is the best hedge for wildlife?

For wildlife the best varieties of hedging plants are native species such as blackthorn, holly and hawthorn, all of which providing welcome shelter and food to our native animals. You can grow a wildlife hedge which consists of several of these native species in a single hedge We have specifically formulated wildlife hedging category, which, for ease of purchase, is sold pre-mixed, by the metre.
