Cracks and splits are perfectly normal and very common with timber. All timber will have small splits that may not be visible at first, but when the timber dries out (especially more so in the summer months) the split can open to show a crack. This can seem alarming at first but is nothing to worry about as it does not affect the integrity of the post. You will find that in the winter, with more moisture in the air, the crack may close up. If the crack looks unsightly then feel free to put some filler in the gap.
