This is my third year surveying a large estate for oak processionary moth larvae and nests. It's encouraging to see that nest numbers are down by 75% following the control measures we've been implementing. Not only do the larvae vigorously feed on oak tree foliage, but they are a threat to people and animals, as they have thousands of tiny hairs which contain an irritating substance called thaumetopoein which can cause respiratory problems, skin rashes and irritation of the eyes. The larvae can also shed their hairs as a defence mechanism.
