There could be no more important issue than saving the planet. One key issue within this is the massive amount of fossil fuel-based material in use; specifically, plastics. Plastics are both derived from a dwindling resource and are often not recyclable or biodegradable. Vast quantities of plastic waste find their way into landfill and the world’s oceans. PVC in particular is a problematic substance. It is made from chlorine and oil, so sustainability in terms of materials is an issue from the start, but still worse are the problems it creates when it comes to the end of its useful life: it does not readily recycle or biodegrade. These issues make aluminium the eco-friendly choice from an ecological perspective. It is the third most common element (behind only oxygen and silicon) and it is by far the most abundant metal. Perhaps because it is so common, we sometimes forget what a remarkable material aluminium is: it is light but strong, has great corrosion resistance properties, has a very low coefficient of heat expansion, and is easily recycled. Here at Intercounty we are conscious of our role within this and we are pleased to offer to our customers such an eco-friendly material. We are also pleased to say that seamless gutters – because they are made and cut to size on site – produce very little waste, and any aluminium that is left over in the manufacturing process is recycled.
