Box tree caterpillars/moths are at record highs this year, they are originally from East Asia but made it over to the UK in 2007, found in gardens by 2011, established in London by 2014 and throughout the whole of the nation within years from then! These caterpillars have been growing in numbers year on year but unfortunately now due to a mild winter, they are killing box hedges in every area we visit! If your box hedges are looking healthy but you notice caterpillars like the one in the second photo, you should remove them by hand and cut off stems covered in their webbing, you will need to do this everyday to keep your hedge/plant safe. We have noticed people recommending certain pesticides, but this does not work. If your hedge/plant looks like the first photo below then unfortunately it’s time to call us in for full removal of the shrub and roots. Hope this information helps!
