Leylandii hedge in Hassocks. nThe owner wanted about a metre off the top as the neighbour was in significant shade. nSadly this hedgerow seems to be affected with Cypress Aphid which has become more prevalent over the last couple of years. nThe aphid sits on the foliage and digs in so as to nourish itself with the sumptuous nutrient being drawn from the ground by the plant. nThe foliage slowly turns brown in small pockets around the plant. A heavy infestation will result in complete plant failure. nThe aphids can be sprayed to control the growing population but in my experience this practice is fairly ineffective. nIn any case, the hedge had to be dealt with to appease the neighbour’s concerns but with any luck the trees will survive the onslaught of infestation.
