DAMP HOUSES DON'T NEED INJECTING OR TANKING! Go on a nice holiday…. You won't need to damp proof your home… People who carry out damp and timber surveys, will tend to check walls for damp using an electrical conductance damp meter. This is not the correct practise, besides, intuition and experience are the only instrument required for a damp survey. The damp meter, or protometer, was designed to assess the level of moisture content in timber, this was the task they were designed for. It can be used to determine the presence of moisture in other materials. However, it can only record the presence of surface moisture and is unable to determine the true moisture content existing in the suspected damp wall, typically 9 inches thick! They go crazy and scream DAMP / WET if they detect condensation, hygroscopic salts, and foil backed paper. Have you ruled these out first? You don’t need a gizmo to tell you that your wall is wet or that you have rising damp. The skirting board will be twisting off the wall with mushrooms hanging out of it if the base of the wall is that wet. Always get a second opinion.
