These are more often than not easily avoidable had they been serviced or maintained correctly, no we can't stop a flue from rusting but we can definitely pick up an issue before it gets so bad the terminal falls (rusts) off in the wind. A first visit to a property may sometimes cost more than a standard service if there is an issue identified but we'll always discuss this with the customer before taking action.
