Magnolia During the 80s' and 90s' Magnolia was everywhere, so why now write about it? Since lockdown and those Zoom interviews on the television, I saw a considerable amount of magnolia walls inviting themselves into my home thrashing against my mind friendly décor. Rarely was it ever a pleasant scene! In the ideal setting, magnolia and like tones work well, the yellow tones can bring calm and warmth to a space. Not an easy scheme to achieve, particularly if you don’t wish to be reminded of a block of butter each time you walk into the room. A scheme such as this requires layering and balance using like warm tones from objects including wood, metal, wool and patterned textures. Use hue’s from the warm colour palette as illustrated. Personally I find magnolia uninspiring, sickly and forgive me here, dirty. Seldom have I seen well designed magnolia interiors. Consider therefore how visitors or employees feel when entering a space surrounded by poor magnolia design. Does it produce the best productivity and wellbeing for those people? Does it inspire? I’ll leave that with you to contemplate. Does magnolia still remain a go to colour of choice? I visited a paint store for the trade, 30% of sales are magnolia, the remaining 70% being white and grey. The feedback was Magnolia is generally bought to cover walls that are already magnolia!!! It’s not for me to say whether magnolia’s had it’s day, but it’s fair to say colour has moved on (but not for everyone).
