..............Horticulture, Has It Got A Place Within Ecology!................. I'm a Member of the Chartered Institute of Horticulture, and my current background is in Garden/Grounds Maintenance, yet, I'm moving into the field of Ecology and Environmental Management. This is the sector that I'm most comfortable and find more enjoyable, as, i started out in my working life as an Parks and Countryside Ranger Apprentice with the National Trust, so Ecology is more in keeping with the sector I was trained in, rather than Garden Maintenance. This has gotten me thinking though, where does Horticulture fit in with Ecology and has it got it's place within this field like Arboriculture has? Well, with Rewilding being at the centre of a lot of peoples minds at the moment, Horticulture plays an Important part in this ecological state of play. In my mind, the Basic principals of Rewilding is to recreate a previous Lost Habitat, so, in order to do this, you need to Plant things to mimic what was previously lost. So, Planting is Horticultural, Right! Another area where Horticulture crosses over with Ecology is in Wildflower/Meadow Planting. I'm seeing a few farmers giving over Acres of their land to make way for this Much Needed practice, and this is invariably done next to Orchard Creation and recreating Woodlands, so Again, Horticulture has a hand in keeping Habitat Creation and Ecology practices working together.
