It's TopTipTuesday! 💡 Today we're answering a question we've received a lot over the winter period. How do I care for my solar battery storage in cold weather? If you’ve opted for battery storage, you’re likely to see a drop in the charge of discharge rates in both extreme cold and extreme hot weather. Battery storage systems work best in warmer weather. Most are rated at 77 degrees and lose about 10 percent of their efficiency for every 15- to 20-degree temperature drop from there. We recommend trying to maintain and protect your batteries from extreme hot and cold temperatures to prolong the battery life. What size PV system do I need?

This depends on your budget, available roof space and the energy output required. Most people buy a system between 1 and 4kWp for a home. It is not essential to provide ALL of your homes electricity via solar PV to realise the financial benefits. The best Feed-in Tariff rate is available for systems up to 4kWp.

Is solar electricity suitable for my home?

You will need a roof or wall that faces within 90 degrees of south, and isn't overshadowed by trees or buildings. If the surface is in shadow for parts of the day, your system will generate less energy. We are here to help with these questions. If you're unsure just give us a call.

Will I be eligible to receive the tariff if I move into a home that already has an electricity generating technology?

Feed In Tariff eligibility remains with the installation, even if the ownership of the home or generating technology changes. Therefore the technology must have been eligible before you move in, even if it is not registered yet.

If my landlord installs an electricity generating technology, who would receive the Feed In Tariffs?

It will be up to landlords and tenants of domestic or commercial property to come to an arrangement about the receipt of payments and on-site electricity use benefits.
