For our client, More House School for Boys, we had to install both channel drains (sometimes called trench drains) and land drains (also known as French drains). This combination meant that the risk of waterlogged soil was hugely reduced, as was the risk of the carpark flooding. nnBut what is the difference between the two types?nnChannel drains work by using gravity to remove water. They should be placed somewhere where water is likely to flow such as at the bottom of an incline. They consist of a small trench, covered with a grate along it's entire length allowing water to enter the drain at any point. nnLand drains consist of lengths of perforated pipe that are buried in the ground, usually under a layer of gravel. When rainfall is particularly heavy or the ground becomes waterlogged and unable to absorb any more, the water flows downwards and into the pipe through the perforations.
